If you search for transport to Abomey in Benin, you will often arrive in Bohicon. That is not a mistake — but it is not your destination either.
Abomey and Bohicon are two separate cities, 12 kilometers apart, that most maps, transport apps, and even some travel guides treat as interchangeable. They are not.
Bohicon: The Transport Hub
Bohicon grew in the colonial era around the railway station built by the French — a practical node on the Cotonou–Parakou line. Today it is a mid-sized commercial city with a large market, decent hotels, a bus station, and the transport connections that make the region accessible.
When you take a shared taxi from Cotonou's Gare de Jonquet, you arrive in Bohicon. When buses come from Parakou or Cotonou, they stop in Bohicon.
Bohicon has its own identity and is perfectly pleasant. But it has no royal palaces, no UNESCO site, and no particular historical significance. It is the gateway, not the destination.
Abomey: The Historic Capital
Abomey is 12 km north of Bohicon, reached by moto-taxi (zem) in about 15–20 minutes, or by shared taxi. It is the former capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey — home to the Royal Palaces, the Historical Museum, the Vodoun shrines, and three centuries of recorded history.

Practical Tips
Getting from Bohicon to Abomey: Take a zem (moto-taxi) from in front of the Bohicon bus station — 500 to 1,000 XOF, 15–20 minutes. Or a shared taxi for a few hundred XOF more.
Where to sleep: Both cities have accommodation. Abomey is the better choice if you want to be close to the sites and have access to guides early in the morning or in the evening. Bohicon is better if you're catching an early bus onward.
Common confusion: If you book transport from Cotonou to "Abomey", confirm whether you're going to Bohicon (where you change) or directly to Abomey. The two destinations are not always distinguished.
From Ouidah or Cotonou airport: A private car with driver will take you directly to Abomey — confirm the destination explicitly. The drive is 2.5 to 3 hours.
